Teaching Cyber Security This Year

My Other Computer
Is Your Computer

Hey, Mr Burnham here... I'm super excited and hope you are too.  If you are game, we are going to learn a lot this year.  We are going to learn about computers, how to image them, how to manage them, and how to secure them.  We will also learn a little about how to test that security.  We will also learn coding.  I want you to play with both C++ and Python.  We are going to do some old school Engineering, and play with Arduino and Raspberry PI boards.  We are going to Hack, We are going Build, We are going to Play... So get excited!!! This year is going to be AWESOME.

So... I'm a High School Teacher...

Wow, it's been more that 6 weeks now... and I can tell you this is the hardest thing I have ever done.  It's super fun, and I love the students... but Wow... you hear about how overworked and undervalued Teachers are... Holy Cow, until you actually do it... you have NO idea... really... No idea...

This is an email I sent my last week at Xilinx.

Hey Everyone.  Jimbo Here... I have decided to do something different and leave Xilinx.  Tuesday Aug 2 will be my last day.  I’m going to go become a High School teacher... Crazy Right? But it’s an opportunity I just could not pass up.  I have always loved teaching, and teaching High School has always been noodling around in my mind.  After 25 years… the time was right.

I will be helping them create a new class on Cyber Security.  I don’t really know that much about Cyber Security, but class starts Aug 17.

Next year we are going to create some straight Electrical Engineering classes, and start a Mechatronics program... That is more my style, so it’s going to be a busy rest of the summer, and probably for the next 2-3 summers too.

So if you know some experts in Cyber Security, send me their contact info.  I want to have a weekly speaker come talk to the students about real life experiences.  If you know some good site, please send me any links you think might be useful.

If you want to keep in touch, here are a few ways:
Email: Jim.Burnham@gmail.com ß Personal Email

And if you want to keep track of my Halloween obsession, check out http://www.squeakyhinge.com/ and https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheSqueakyHingeProject/

It’s been a good and wild run here at Xilinx…  but this next adventure should be fun too.
